So when Magic Light had the idea of adapting Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s book, we were both really were excited at the opportunity to show what we could do as a team. Room on the broom movie professional#We’d always planned on doing professional work together. We either co-directed or helped each other on all our student films. Max Lang: Jan and I met in 2005 when we started studying at the Filmakademie in Ludwigsburg. I recently spoke to Max and Jan about the film, their creative process, the challenges of staying true to a beloved children’s book being adapted to animation and how they achieve such a rich, beautiful hand-made look.ĭan Sarto: So how did the two of you come to work on this film? It is only after the menagerie bands together to save the witch from a dragon that they all learn the value of sharing and working as a team. The 25 minute Christmas special tells the story of a witch, whose cat become more and more annoyed as they share their increasingly tighter flying broomstick seating space with an assortment of animals picked up as they journey about. In addition to having just captured a BAFTA Children’s Award for Best Animation, Room on the Broom also has been shortlisted for a nomination in this year’s animated short Oscar category. Now, Max Lang is back, this time teamed with film school buddy Jan Lachauer, to tackle another classic Donaldson and Scheffler tale, Room on the Broom. ![]() That was followed up by The Gruffalo’s Child (2011) directed by Johannes Weiland and Uwe Heidschotter, also a successful British Christmas special. Their first effort, The Gruffalo (2009), a hugely popular British Christmas special directed by Jakob Schuh and Max Lang, was nominated for an Oscar. So when it comes to adapting the children’s books of famed authors Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, UK producers Martin Pope and Michael Rose have trusted German animation studio Studio Soi’s unique production style to bring the classic stories to the screen. And I imagine that child, adult or family will feel the same.There’s something to be said for not messing with success. In conclusion, I loved it and found it hard to deny its charm. I will say thought that Timothy Spall is not quite as good, and this has nothing to do with his voicing actually at all, he does give his all to make the most of it, but more that his character doesn't quite off as well as the rest. Rob Brydon, Gillian Anderson, David Walliams, Sally Hawkins and Martin Clunes voice their characters wonderfully. Simon Pegg of course stands out in restrained but dynamic mode as the narrator though he also has freedom to have some droll moments as well. They are also written respecting those of the book and written in a way that doesn't make them childish to an adult yet also easy for the children to understand. The dialogue has similar rhyming rhythms, in how poetic, gentle and bouncing-like they are, to those of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child. The witch was especially true to this, and all the critters are very cute without being overly-so. Again, like the story they are simple but all the better for it. As for the characters, they are engaging and likable. Despite the short running time, Room on the Broom never felt rushed. The story is very charming and heart-warming with some touching moments, true it is simple but considering the target audience and the book itself, of which Room on the Broom is remarkably faithful to this was appropriate. Thankfully the story and characters are done very well indeed on their own. It is not just the quality of it that impresses, it is also to do with how much it does in defining the characters and story which I found incredibly compelling to watch. Detailed and vibrantly coloured, I loved the balance between hand-drawn and computer-generated animation, meaning that anybody who is fond of either style(admittedly I am more a hand-drawn person myself) will find Room on the Broom a treat. The animation on the other hand is just wonderful. Timothy Spall does voice him very well though, even if it is somewhat different to the roles I associate him with. ![]() ![]() There is very little to criticise actually here, but while the dragon is very charismatic- some may say too much so- I did feel that he wasn't quite scary enough considering the type of character he is. While I did like but was disappointed in The Snowman and the Snowdog of the animated short films(especially as I adore the original so much) I got so much pleasure from Room on the Broom as I did with The Gruffalo and its sequel from previous years.
